Bolens Eaton #11 hydrostat in 20 hp 2050 tractor

My owners manual for this tractor specifies a Bolens part Number for the recommended hydrostat fluid. My smaller older Bolens also with an Eaton #11 hydro specifies 20w-20 oil. I am currently running 15w-40 diesel rated engine oil in the 2000 series 2 speed tractor, but it is losing power as the oil warms up. The tractor has well over 1,000 hours (the hour meter died 15 years ago or maybe way before that) and the hydro is original. I have checked the Eaton website for their recommendations, but they were not clear (at least in my mind).

What have you guys found that works well?

Think my Wheel Horse 520 has an Eaton 11, book says either 10/30 or 10/40, works good with 1250 hrs. on it.

Thanks for the reply. In my above post I screwed up the model # of the tractor. It is a 5020 with a 20 hp cast iron 2 cylinder Kohler opposed. It is heavy duty.

I went back to my notebook of Bolens manuals, and did not find the parts manual for this Bolens, so I am going by (fading??) memory of which model hydro it has. I still think it is the Eaton #11, but I have found that Bolens used the model #12 in some of their heavy duty models.

Anyhow, I do think my 15-40 oil is thinning out as it gets worked for more than 15 to 20 minutes.

I have a copy of the a copy of the Bolens 5000 series Service Manual.

Send an email to me: oldbuzz(at)hotmail dot com, and I'll reply with a copy of it attached.

The 5019H and 5020H both have the Eaton 11 hydro with the 2-spd rear end.

Other than the Bolens part number oil, other oils it lists for the hydro are Benzoil THL 19, Mobil 423, and Texaco TDH.

Those are all standard tractor hydraulic oils that met the JD J20C specs.

Pretty much any of the current tractor hydraulic oils will work in that hydro.

A lot of guys say that the NAPA oil works well.
