Engine is mounted in a LT3000 Craftsman. Good mower great deck, but this is the 2nd engine, that threw a rod. No not out of oil. What could be causing this problem? Is this common with Briggs engines?

Throwing rods in any garden tractor motor brand is not uncommon, as of the issue who knows what could of caused it, usually it is low oil, but as you stated it had fine oil level. I guess throw another briggs in her and keep going.

do you mow a lot of hillsides or slopes? If so that might cause an oil starvation issue as the oil flows to one side or the other. As other have said frequent oil changes using oil specified by the manufacturer, keep the engine clean and keep the governor properly adjusted so it doesn't over speed. And yes most air cooled stuff is happiest running at the RPM it was designed for, usually WOT/rated RPMS

Thanks for the information, the fins are as clean as a whistle, I use a 30wt heavy duty oil. I do mow slopes but very short distance and not really that steep, isn't that why it has an oil pump and filter? anymore suggestions would be welcomed

I guess we need more info.
How many hours did you get before they blew?

What did the crank and remainder of the rods look like? What does the air filter look like? You don't blow it out, do you? What does the inside of the carburetor intake look like?-Is there dust in there? That is stuff I would look at if it was in my shop.

The air filter is clean, the intake is clean no dirt. The crank has does have the remains of the rod cap mashed on it. one bolt was still in place the other was bent and laying loose in the pan. rod is broke about an 1" above where it goes together with the crank. Did I run the wrong oil? Heavy duty 30 wt.? Engine has about 50 hours in 3 years.

I sold snappers for about thirty years. It was rare to see a briggs throw a rod unless it was low on oil or just plain wore out.

I would use 15-40 oil.
