Could it be too high of RPMs.? I run my mowers at a nice speed but never up at the "notch" on the throttle from the factory. Like guys with tractors that pull the gas leaver under the throttle bracket for that little extra power. Good oil change cycle is the only thing I can think of. No add the cautionary plan of pulling the air shrouds now and then to blow out all of the grass clippings and possible mouse nests. I also wash off any oil that is on the cooling fins. That's my list.

I've always heard that these small engines should only be worked at the rated speed. In other words, if it makes 5 hp at 3600, you should not work it at a higher or lower speed. Obviously it's fine to idle down when you're finished for the day, but it should be at wot when under load.
