Kohler 12 hp 301A Engine

I have a Cub Cadet 125 tractor with the 301A Kohler engine. The engine has a knock that occurs at lower RPMS. I listened to the noise using a stethoscope. The knock is coming from the flywheel side of the engine. (It's louder on/around the engine cover.)

I have four other Cub Cadet tractors and only two have the annoying knocks. This engine has been overhauled but the knock was there before the overhaul.

Any ideas or suggestions?

Thanks,

It is a possible that it is related to the balance that is mounted to a shaft that is part of the block. I had one fall of after the shaft broke. Ran the engine for the next few years without a balance. It really didn't shake very bad at all. I think the engine was on a S-12 New Holland.

Balance weights are loose.

I have seen that many times on B&S engines. The weights are priced at half the price of a new engine so they don't get replaced when someone overhauls the engine.

Well, to start with, those cast iron dinosaurs aren't the quietest engine to begin with.

In addition to what the others have said, are the valve clearances set to spec (TOUGH to do if there's some hours on the engine because the valvestems pound recesses into the tappet adjusting bolts).

If the piston is eroded on the HOT exhaust valve side they get a nasty piston slap/knock.

Also, if CAMSHAFT endplay is excessive they will knock (but I can't remember if this will be more evident on the PTO end or the flywheel end).

Thanks for your help.

I've checked out your recommendations and have narrowed the problem to the balance weights.
