Briggs Stratton NPR 6 engine

I have a Briggs & Stratton NPR 6 engine (Type 307066, Serial #1537787) I'm trying to get running. At this point it has no spark so possibly new points and coil is needed. Had a stuck exhaust valve but is free now. Everything is complete with no missing parts. Where would I be able to locate parts for this engine? What year was this engine made? It belonged to my grandfather's brother many years ago and I want to get it running again. Thanks for your assistance.

Rub the points with a point file or use a piece of 400 wet or dry until shiny. Check the point gap too. Then see if you have fire to your plug.

Thanks everyone for your reply. As of now I have the flywheel nut loosened learning it is a left hand thread. The flywheel key is intact and does not appear to be distorted. (#1) What is the best (and safest) for removing the flywheel? There is no internal threads to put bolts with a puller. Do I use a 2 or 3 jaw puller on the perimeter of the flywheel and gently tighten the puller and tap the crankshaft? I will be removing the carburetor for inspection. Do I want to soak it in lacquer thinner to loosen and remove any gum or foreign substance? Will keep looking for a parts supplier. If anyone knows where they can be purchased, I appreciate your assistance.

Make sure the magnets on the flywheel are shiney and the coil pick ups too.....also correct air gap between magnets and coil.....

I have not heard of that model before. What is the code number?

If it has points they need to be cleaned with fine sand paper.

Steve, you can look up the Briggs part numbers in the parts catalogs available to view at the ASECC link I previously posted (did you NOT notice that?), and once you have the parts numbers, you can check if they are still available from a Briggs dealer, or GOOGLE them, or check ebay.

I don't think you will have much trouble finding all or most of the parts you may need that way.

Ray, all little rust has NO effect on magneto operation, up to the point there's so much the coil and magnets are scraping against the rust on each other.

Here's what the official Briggs website has to say about that:

"Now, how about some of those old wives tales that just aren't true.

Rust on the flywheel magnets causes a loss of spark. Not true. A magnetic field does not care about rust. It has no effect on it."
You can read that for yourself about half way down the linked Briggs page.

T.G., Info on the model and code he posted is readily available on the ASECC site to which I previously posted a link.

Here's a more specific one, the the parts catalog (in .pdf format).

While I know for a fact that Briggs and Stratton engines have a strong magneto setup, even the older models with point ignition. it matters not what they claim, I have personally restored spark on many engines by sanding the rust off the flywheel and coil laminations without any other adjustment! Yes, sometimes they were making contact because of heavy rust buildup, but more often than not, they were just rusty. Rust, when it becomes thick enough, obviously creates insulation, which blocks the magnetic impulses.

The B&S NPR is a great little engine and nearly bullet proof if cared for, most service parts are readily available from your B&S dealer if you dont have one locally we stock the ignition parts for these, you contact me through the site or through my website

Normally a good cleaning of the points will get you spark and up and running, if they are severly pitted or worn I suggest replacing them as well as the condenser as long as the flywheel is off already.
