I have a david Bradley walking tractor. It has a cast iron briggs on it that is stuck tight. Has anyone else put a newer engine on one of these? How many problems am I going to have trying this?

I'll bet it can be done with not a lot of work. Would be a great application for one of those Carroll Stream air cooled diesels.

Pull the spark plug out of it and fill the cylinder up with ATF and also drain the oil out and fill it with ATF and set the engine aside. Yes a common newer B/S engine will bolt right on with no problems just make sure the shaft size is the same since you need to use the pulley the D/B engine has on it. I have a D/B that had a 3hp BS engine on it when I got it and I put a D/B engine back on since I had one laying around. Just remember the D/B engine was only like 2 or 3 HP

Im actually just thinking a 5hp briggs. My grandpa has one. He doesn't get around the greatest and I'm thinking that with a home made sulky cart w poo lid be somthing he would really use. Think id have a problem witb the trans with a 5hp? It 'll never do anything but pull him around and a couple buckets of corn or some fencing supplies

Hi jr1983, you won't hurt that transmission, DB used that tranny in the Sears Suburban riding tractors and the later ones had a 7.25 HP B&S in them and I know some have put even more HP in them. Go for it the 5 hp Briggs will mount right up.

Great thanks a lot. I will fill up thr original with tag
and shelve it. My grandpa is an old farmer of modest
means. He really liked that old DB. He has had two
hip replacements so I'm trying to come up with
somthing he can get on and use around the farm to
make his life a little easier. The last detail I'm trying
to work out is getting brakes on the sulky. Im willing
to put some money in this but I can't spend a lot. I
think an 85 year old man who lives on rough terrain
should have a means of stopping this contraption.
Lol. Any ideas would be appreciated.
