Cub Cadet 2160 PTO clutch

Could someone tell me how to remove the electric pto clutch? I have a '96 CC 2160 w/ the twin Briggs motor & only use the tractor for snowblowing in the winter. It has 650hrs but runs great. Last winter I put bar tires on it, then the Pto would not shut-off. I tried a new switch, that did not fix the problem. Also, where is the best place to get a replacement clutch, I'm tring to avoid the dealer. Thanks Jeff

The clutch should come off by removing the one bolt in the center.

The bearing is likely bad. While 'they' say that it isn't serviceable and the clutch must be replaced, I have changed it successfully. the bearing is pressed into the stamped housing and retained by six or eight 'stakes' around the edge.

Use a sharp chisel, ground to the dimension of the stakes and cut them off. remove the bearing, replace and using the same chisel, make indentations in the housing mimicking the original.

Or, search ebay for the clutch. It can usually be found there at a better than dealer price.

I should have added that I lossened the 3 smaller spring loaded nuts on the outer triangle shaped outer bracket, then tried to remove the center bolt. It just spins, feels like its turning over the motor? Regular threads or left=handed? Thanks Jeff

right hand threads. You'll either need some way to hold the engine from turning, or use an impact wrench. The latter is my preferred method, really makes it easy.

You may be able to get a screwdriver into the flywheel around the starter, I don't remember how much room there is there.

Or, pull a spark plug, insert several inches of small rope and turn the engine, in the normal rotation direction, until it stops against that rope. Be sure to leave some sticking out for removing! Now, loosen the center bolt, remove the rope and reinstall the plug.

I just did my 2160 the same as Kencombs posted.

My PTO clutch inner bearing had seized, so I just took out the bolt and the clutch pulled off by hand. I can't remember, but I don't think I even used an impact. With the clutch seized, it held everything firm between those 2 x lugs on the bracket on the front of the engine that stop the clutch spinning around.

I filed/chiseled out the stake's, pressed in new bearings and re staked. Bearings were about $15 each for good brand at local bearing supplier. When I re torqued the clutch bolt I just used vise grips in the main shaft behind the fan on the back side of the engine to hold it. Don't forget to set the air gap on the clutch. I have the Cub Cadet service manual. If you look on line, you should be able to download it free.
