I have a Powermate generator with 5 hp B&S engine on. I need a muffler that will quite it down. Right now it would keep the neighbors up a mile away. It has the bolt on type right now. Any advice? Thanks in advance.

Good Evening Gary

I wish that I could tell you how to quite the B/S Engine down . But there isn t any way . You either need a Honda , Kaw , or a Yamah. Sp. on the last 2 . The noise on the Briggs is caused from the gears inside the Engine , the teeth are straight cut Where the others are not.
You will just have to live with the noise until you can replace the uint.

I completely agree with AZpeapicker. It will take more than a different muffler to make that engine neighbour friendly. Honda gensets are renown for how quiet they are and it mostly has to do with how their engines are engineered and built.

You can get bigger, quieter mufflers, but the BS is just noisy compared to a Honda. I know one guy that built an insulated box that fit over his genset with an air intake hose and exhaust port. But that was a winter time only thing where cooling wasn't and issue at minus 25F. Worked good though.

All the below are correct. I have a 8 HP B&S generator with a specific built 'quiet' muffler on it. Hardly made a difference. All the noise comes straight through the block.

I know what you mean about the racket, drives me crazy let alone the neighbors/ I generally try to just provide answers to questions without diving into ifs, whys and why nots but in your case you might consider the total cost before spending any money on that genny. Fuel savings with the aforementioned Honda set will be in the range of one half in my experience. Add that to the cost of your muffler and subtract what you can sell your current one for on CL and you might be able to step up to a Honda for little outlay and have the problem fixed. The others are right in that a simple muffler change isn't going to give you what you are after.

Thanks for all the input. I did not realize a B&S was that difficult to quiet down. May just take the suggestion and sell this one and buy a different one.
