pto clutch, Case 224

Ok so I finally figured out why my PTO lever was functioning backwards and beginning to slip way too easy. After checking it all out and referencing a manual, (thanks Tom Arnold for giving me the link)I noticed that the previous owner had assembled it COMPLETELY backwards. Also most of the parts are worn badly. Disappointed. Oh well I guess I gotta remember that I got this unit for next to free and have managed to use the tractor quite a bit for a number of years already. Anyway, bottom line is I need most of the parts or a complete replacement clutch. Does anyone know where I could source the part(s) for less? Found one on ebay for about 600 bucks. Ouch. The tractor is worth it, however I currently can not afford that kind of repair bill. Then it would have to wait till at least next spring. Is it likely one would find a good used one? Also do they fit from different case/ingersoll models?

Putting aside the clutch that was used in the old 100 Series GT's prior to 1969, the early PTO clutch was known as a "shim style clutch" because in order to adjust it, you moved shims from one location to another. But in the mid-70's, the EZ Adjust Clutch arrived on the scene, making clutch adjusting much simpler. I tell you this because I want you to know that all of the clutch parts are the same between the two types EXCEPT for the main shaft. And of course, the main shaft for a Kohler engine is different than one for the ONAN.

New parts are sold at the dealers such as the one in the link below. You can by the clutch disc, the spring washers, the Belleville washers, the cams, the throwout fork etc as separate items but the big issue is the condition of your main shaft. It is supposed to be absolutely smooth but after years of use, they get grooves worn into them and those grooves make it impossible to perform an clutch adjustment that will last.

Quite often, you will find really, good used clutches for sale on e-Bay for less than $200.00. If the clutch is 100 percent complete and has a smooth main shaft, then that would be a possible solution to your problem. Some Sellers on e-Bay are not aware that a NEW clutch assembly comes with the throw-out fork and the fan. Sellers who know Case equipment usually have multiple photos showing the condition of the main shaft along with all of the other parts. Look at their feedback rating.
