Case 444 Fluids

I am in the process of changing all the fluids on my latest purchase, a Case 444. I do have an owners manual which says 3 pt.s in the engine, doesn't look like much in there. The differential says 3 qts. I drained all the water and oil out of it and it doesn't seem to want the third quart.maybe there is another fill hole I don't know about. I am filling it thru the hole just above the hitch. I could get 3 quarts in by raising the rear end, but I doubt if it was designed that way. Nothing in the manual says how much goes in the hydraulic system. It says to keep the level 5 to 6 inches below the fill hole so it doesn't overflow. Are these capacities correct?

Kohler engines in CASE garden tractors have a smaller oil pan than normal. You should be using straight grade 30 weight detergent base motor oil in the engine. Your dipstick will tell you when it is full.

The trans-axle may have a bunch of crud in it and that may be why it is not accepting the 3rd quart. Normally, those trans-axles have no problems taking 3 quarts. However, check the right side of the housing to see if your tractor has a THIRD plug. The one on the back is the fill plug. There is also a drain plug at the bottom of the housing but newer tractors also had a level plug near the brake band. Those tractors only called for ONE PINT of oil but the consensus is to put at least ONE QUART and forget about the level plug. You can use 15W40 in the trans-axle.

The amount of oil used in the hydraulic system varies because of tank design changes. You can safely put 5 quarts into the reservoir and then use a home-made dipstick to figure out when you have reached the 6 inches below the top of the filler neck. Once again, you should be using 15W40 motor oil such as Shell's Rotella T.

The previous owner must have lost the dipstick when he "overhauled" the engine. I'll take one from another engine with the same size crankcase and check it tomorrow.
I'll also make a dipstick so I can check the hydraulic level.
The transaxle has the fill plug above the hitch and two other plugs under the brake band. The level of the plug looks like it might take a pint before the oil would flow out of the level plug. I got a little less than 2 quarts in it so I'll leave it at that.
Thanks Tom
