Belt drive conversion to shaft drive snowblower

I am thinking about converting a Ariens Model 836004 snowblower to shaft drive. The blower is presently driven by belts.I want to attach the snowblower to my New Holland S14 hydro tractor.I have the splined pto shaft on the tractor front.I contacted Ariens company about the impeller speed and they indicated it was 1080 rpm.Does anybody have any idea if I could run the blower direct off the front pto,or would that be too fast for the blower? The blower has a gear box to run the auger but no other gear box.If I would take off the large Vpulley that is attached to the impeller shaft I could make an adapter to hook up my pto shaft to the impleller shaft. The blowers mounting should be easy to adapt to my tractor.Anybody ever do this?I dont know the rpms of the tractors pto shaft.Any ideas and info would be greatly appreciated!

If you want to do this successfully, then you have to do your homework in advance. Talk to your New Holland dealer and find out the speed of the front PTO shaft first. You must make the Ariens spin at 1080 RPM. If you overspeed it, then it will not throw snow properly because the TIP SPEED of the fan is to fast for the snow to exit up the chute. The snow will just bypass the chute and the efficiency will drop dramatically. The 2nd issue is whether there are any shear pins on the Ariens unit that will protect the auger and the gearbox when something hidden in the snow jambs either the auger or the fan.

Thank You for the fast reply! I would not have known about the TIP SPEED. The auger on the blower has 2 shear bolts so we are ok there. I will have to find out the PTO speed on the tractor. Thanks again!

Don't forget to check that PTO direction matches the direction the fan needs to turn.

It's easy to calculate the front pto speed on that machine Just measure the pulley on the engine and the one on the PTO shaft. Since the engine runs at 3600rpm at wot multiplying that number by the drive/driven pulley ratio will give the PTO speed.

I think it is a 2000rpm pto, but am not sure.
