Bad Boy Tech

I have a Broadmore, the original 20hsp Briggs threw a rod. Low oil, expensive way for the kids to learn to check the oil... anyway..
I replaced it with a 18hsp Briggs (John Deere) motor. the engine was running decent. But then it started to act up.
First it melted twice the positive side of the battery. That is one of two poroblems. The second problem the engine acts as though it is running out of fuel. So when it is under heavy load it acts as like it is running out of fuel.

Thanks for the help.

Most likely you are right that you have two problems.

1. The running out of fuel problem is most likely a clogged jet in the carburetor. Although retriction anywhere else in the fuel sytem can cause that too. I guess it is surging really bad when its under load.

2. The 'melting the positive side of the battery'. I guess you mean it melted the post or where the post goes in the case? Sounds like you either have one or several bad connections in th wiring, or the wiring on the engine is not compatible with the wiring on the chassis. Or the charging system voltage is getting way too high. The problem could even be a bad connection on the ground side of the circuit.

3. There is a remote possiblity that if your engine is equipped with a fuel solenoid, the electrical problem may be causing problems/intermittent faiure with the fuel solenoid.
