JD Z225 will not idle

Has always ran fine, all of the sudden it will not idle smoothly. I have changed the plug and air filter still surges at idle. Runs great at top speed, plenty of power. At times is is slow to slow down to idle. Any help is appreciated.

I forgot to mention it has a 18.5 hp B&S engine.

The carburetor is probably stopped up in the idle circuit. That is the number 1 cause of surging at idle.

Check your throttle and governor linkage for binding. That may be your slow down problem. Also check the idle speed screw, I occasionally see one that is screwed in too far and won't let the throttle close.

Some people that have carb. trouble turn the speed screw on the throttle lever in so it won't surge at idle. But then it has problems with idling down or no idle at all.
