Jd318 engine

My 318 starts hard after sitting for a week, doesn't seem to have as much power or it bogs down real easy and backfires when I turn it off. Any ideas? I read another post where an electric fuel pump was added. Good idea? Thanks for any info.

1. Your fuel is draining back to the tank. It has to pump it up and fill the carburetor before it starts.

2. The backfire: There is a good chance your carburetor is partially stopped up somewhere. That's probably causing your low power issue too. You are cutting it off at near wide open throttle, aren't you? If you throttle down and then switch off you run a little unburned gas out on the hot muffler, where it explodes. It can be hard on a head gasket or exhaust gasket too. Makes the end come out of the muffler, too.

3. I know some people put electric fuel pumps on them. If that's your fancy go for it! I doubt it will solve your backfire and power problems though.

It was my dads tractor, now it's mine, so I'm trying to sort out the issues. I throttle it down to idle for a bit before I shut it off. I'm just starting to research it. Old cracked fuel lines can be an issue too I guess. I'd rather keep the fuel system the way it is if I can fix it. I'll take a look at the carb and check settings. Seems like having the fuel line routed over the hot motor wouldn't be good either.

The fuel line "in" the tank crack and break. What motor? The older 318s have points and they need to be changed every ten years or so.:)
