So. I have a 1965 AC Big Ten garden tractor. It's has a 10 horse Briggs and Stratton motor. Well I threw the main bearing in the motor and I need a new connecting rod and to get my crank turned. Does anyone know how I can fix this? I've tried local stores by me but the need the serial number off the motor but I can't seem to find it. Anyways if anyone could help I would greatly appriciate it

It maybe cheaper to buy a short block. Call small engine warehouse to see if they have a short block or a replacement engine. They will need the model and type numbers off the fan shroud. Hal

You may have to upgrade. As far as I know, most of the 10hp Briggs internal parts are NLA. I doubt you will find anyplace that has a short block for that engine. The good news is the outer dimensions stay the same through the 16hp single cylinder, so you could find one of those to rebuild and get a power upgrade to boot.

Some thoughts:
You need to go to www.Simpletractors.com and get in with them. They are Simplicity Collectors and can help if you cant find your numbers.
I am thinking your tag was on the cover that wraps around the cylinder, opposite the blower cover, since I am fairly certain that is a cast iron version.
If it was not there, look for rivet holes.

If the numbers are not there, then look for them up the edge of the blower cover behind the carburetor, opposite side of the blower cover, or across the top of the blower cover near where the blower cover bolts to the head.

You need a model number, spec. number and sometimes the code number to get the correct parts.

Then your search will be in two parts: 1. find the connecting rod (and rings, piston, gaskets, etc. Gotta have all available if you are going to much of any kind of repair.) 2. As well as find a shop that can machine your crank, as it will probably have to be ground .010 undersize. I'm told this takes a special fixture that some automotive machine shops don't have.

Don't give up if your dealer says its NLA. until you have exhausted all the other avenues. There are people who specialize in selling obsolete parts, as well as aftermarket (Rotary, Stens) which sometimes have workable parts the OEM no longer has, And then there is always Ebay. If you can come up with the part numbers you need, you can google the part numbers and sometimes find it online.

Agreed. I looked up Small Engine Warehouse for the Allis B-10 and it lists no engine parts. It does claim tat they have an 11 HP Briggs engine witha conversion kit that works - but they don't list the engine or the conversion kit - I guess you have to call.

A new Briggs engine will run in the $370-$450 range.

I bought a 10hp B&S engine from the small engine warehouse for my Horse Troy Bilt tiller. It also had electric start. I sold the 6hp Tecumseh engine for $65.00. I gave $100.00 for the tiller it needed tines and seals under the tine holder. I also painted the tiller while I was waiting on the new engine. I think this was back in 2006. I think I had bought about 30 tillers back in the 1970's & 1980's. Most had been unsheltered that had those neutral start switches that usually were full of water. I even had 2 black tillers that were built during
their 25th anniversary in 1991. Hal

Here's the literature on those black Troy Bilt tillers. Their price is shown too back in 1991. Hal
