Kohler Courage engine needs to see the wizard

Neighbor's mower was spewing oil. I posted a question previously about the possible causes. I was hoping for a valve or ring issue. No such luck. Maybe this engine needs to go with The Cowardly Lion to see the wizard; because I think it's all out of courage.

Nice crack in the block top to bottom. Follow the magic marker arrows.

Engine is a Kohler SV590-0017. I had just fixed the deck and put a new carburetor on this mower for them (as a neighborly gesture)...now this.

Are there other engines that will fit this application? Any chance of finding a used engine somewhere (ebay, Craigslist, etc.)

Yep, that spec. number tends to crack there. I don't reccommend another Courage engine.

A Briggs and Stratton single cylinder engine with the correct crankshaft dimensions and proper size charging system should bolt right on. The only concern then is the muffler, and most times you can either install a deflector or work around that problem some way.

That's where mine cracked after 300 not too tough hours and is currently in the junk pile. Replaced with a BS V twin 20 I got off www
for $700 new with free shipping.

My mower with the courage is a 46" Husqvarna. Looking at current mowers of that size and brand, the Courage is no longer an
available engine. You either get a 19hp single (Kohler as I recall) or for a hundred bucks more get it with the same engine as my BS
replacement.

Smallenginewarehouse in IN may have a replacement engine. They need all the numbers and letters off the old engine.
I installed a 10hp Briggs from them on my Troy Bilt tiller. It also had electric start. I sold the Tecumseh 6 hp
for $65.00. Hal

That's some pretty graphic proof of how good those Courage (coward?) engines are. I've heard nothing good about them.

I'll look into that. Thanks
