Zero turn mower

I recently got a ZTrak Z930M mower with a 60" mowing deck. It does not have the Mulch on demand option. I would like to be able to mow very close on either side of the mower. If I remove the grass deflector on the right side and then put a metal block on the deck - will it still mow well or will I cause damage to the mower? Thanks

Not familiar with a Ztrak, but I tried that my simplicity and in heavy grass it balled up, and in lighter grass left it in piles and clumps rather than spreading it out.

It must depend on the design of deck because mine does just the opposite and throws a smooth blanket of grass clippings. My neighbors makes no differance it throws clumps all the time.

The neighbor has a Z track and they removed the deflector. Let me tell you, that's the fastest way to wear every single clipping that the mower cuts - wind or no wind. I ran it once and it made me crazy. It makes running the trimmer look like something you should do in your Sunday clothes.

it will mow only if you mowing off not much in height or say you mowing 3 time a week otherwise it will pile and bunch. you are trying to make a mulch unit out of it and they only work well on cutting inch or less grass off and it better be dry. if that was your idea why didn't you buy a rear discharge unit.

Thanks to everyone that has replied. When I got this mower, I had never had a zero turn and never once thought about a rear discharge unit. Of course, my hindsight is great now. I am just trying to make the best with my new mower. I don't want to do damage to it and probably will just have to live with it the way it is. Thanks again Randy

When mowing commercially we often had to block the discharge when mowing next to walkways, windows, roadways etc. But also didnt want them blocked when they didn't have to be. We made up plates such as you suggest and hinged them at the top and also made up handles so they could be flipped on the run. I'd bet there are ready made kits to do this now?
Cutting with the discharge blocked is not a simple as blocking the chute. Dull blades, wet and tall grass = mess. There are some specialty blades that help with mulching such as gator blades. The decks definitely do not like being blocked, but sometimes you have to do what you have to do.

Congrats Randy.
You've got one of the best decks for wet or dry cutting.

Deere's MOD deck isn't getting many rave reviews.
I've read of an LCO buying a regular 7-Iron shell & stripping the components out of his MOD deck to put in the new shell.

For some, the rear-discharge decks don't work at all.

If you search for (Deere, 7-Iron, mower, etc.) OCDC you'll see some chute-blocker examples.

I don't think I can post hot-links here?
