Back in the 60's- and 70's in our dealer sales book we had a number of aftermarket items we could order for garden tractors, one was a front mount mower unit that used chains on a drum to mow with, this unit would mow over rocks debris ect and not throw them,,,, I sure would like one today to use but can find no info on them or even what they were called,,,,, anyone remember these and or know/have one for sale? I do not care what tractor they fit as I can adapt them to my CASE units IF I can find one thanks for any help

Don't know how well or if it would work for your situation, but maybe those front mount units types the golf courses use may be an option? Again, just throwing the idea out there, not sure how tall of grass those things can handle, nor do I have any idea of the expense involved.

In that era both Mott and Haban made front mounted flail mowers for Garden Tractors..

Neither of them used chains. They both used knives.

They will cut pretty rough stuff, tall grass, and in the fall are great for getting rid of dry leaves. Turns them into itty bitty pieces :D :D :D

Here's a vid of my Bolens HT20D with a 48" Haban Flail-Mo working.

Thanks for the info guy's, the grass I need to cut is 3'-4' high, I have a hydra cutter for my CASE compacts that will do the job, I just thought if I could find one like I seen in lit it would be handy, I do not remember any thing on the ends of the chains but they sure may have,, thanks for the links as well

A flail mower will cut grass that high, but it would be slow going.

For that kind of cutting a sickle bar mower would be better.

Haban made those for garden tractors too:

Yes I had a Habban mower like that, we sold CASE and in our order books we had a Lot of aftermarket items to go on our tractors, the one I am talking about would cut Very high grass weeds ect the pics I remember the grass looked as high as the tractor hood, I remember the pic of the underside of the unit, I have seen pulltype units similar here we called sage-brush beaters, no "flail" just a chain, that is how they were made, must not have sold many, they really looked like a great unit for mowing waterways ruff terrain ect,,, as for using a sickle mower I cannot get into the places I want to mow with one, I have rows of equipment I would like to keep mowed around
thanks again
