Gravely with 16 horse kohler

my Gravely has a 16hp Kohler opposed that the coil has gone south. The engine tag is too corroded to read and the coil doesn't have any ID on it. anyone who can make an educated guess at what parts # coil I need to order? the local dealer wont do it on a match up bassis....got to have numbers

Carl, if is a pre-Magnum KT series engine, take a look at ebay auction # 191602024335.

It lists many Kohler part numbers than can be replaced by a single coil.

How about a picture of the engine and coil?

Kohler had so many variations over the years its going to be hard to just guess.
If you can provide a bit more info on the engine and coil, possibly the year of the tractor we can try and help, I am a Kohler dealer

Key info needed to find a coil: does it have points or electronic ignition? That and a couple of good pics should let someone id it for you.

There are three different coil systems that I know of and I have two of them. Down load the Kohler service book for "K" series engines. It has been posted multible times on this sight and it will tell you everything you want to know. Next thing is to tell that part guy to jump. I know the Gravely parts place down the street is like that. Also the guys who sell Honda parts are the same way. I ended up putting a Briggs deflector on my Honda and it works perfect. It cost a lot less too! Good parts place for lawn mower and small engine can tell you in an instant. If it is round like a normal coil just go to a lawnmower junk yard and pull one off of a cub cadet. Same thing. If it looks like something out of Star Trek or a hot rod then you have a solid state coil system with an internal trigger. VERY different system! Much more bucks too.
