I have a 1996 MTD lawn tractor with a Briggs model 289707 engine. I drained a half gallon oil gas mixture from the sump. It was used to mow a steep bank the last time it was operated. What should I be looking for in the carb?

Most likely the needle and seat are leaking gas when the engine is shut off and sitting you can order a carb kit and replace the needle or the simple thing is to install a gas shutoff valve in the gas line before the carb and see it the cures the problem

It is gravity feed from fuel tank. Does Briggs carry the carb kit or is it third patry supplier?

You have the model number of engine you should be able to go into any small engine shop and they should be able to get you a kit. There is one problem that you might run into is some carburetor the seat for needle is part of carb and can not be replaced if it is damaged ( ethanol gasoline pit seat).
