JD 318 with the Onan P218 twin runs great for half an hour, then dies. starts up again after an hour or two. Coil or coil pick-up? thanks for your help

First thing to check is the gas cap vent. Seen it more than once.

If it's electrical, it will cut off like you flipped a switch. If it's fuel-related, it will be more of a gradual shut off.

Thanks Jay. It died like turning the key. I checked ( with test light) and had power on both sides of coil. went out after dinner and it started right up. havent had time to look at it today,

Connect a 12v test light between +12v terminal on coil & neg(-) terminal of battery & leave connected, setup light so you can see from seat when useing tractor, run tractor as you normally would, when eng quits check if light still on,If light out then problem in wiring system or safety sw's.

Most 318's have a 25A circuit breaker connected between battery terminal on starter sol & battery terminal of ign sw,breaker may be going bad or connectors on same loose/going bad generating heat causeing breaker to trip,if breaker isn't the problem it may be loose/dirty connector's in wiring harness or an internal problem in one of the safety sw,ign sw or pto sw.

Another way to check ign system is disconnect wire on + terminal of coil & run a jumper wire from coil + to battery + terminal & run this way to see if eng quits as jumper bypasses all safety sw's & ign sw,if eng quits with jumper installed then problem in ign system or possibly lube system if oil pressure sw for same wired into ign system, you'll have to disconnect jumper to stop eng after checking operation of ign system.

I'm "guessing" that when I went to check connections on the circuit breaker, and it went into 3 pieces, that it might be a suspect. I'll keep you posted. LOL
