I have owned a WH C175 since 1981. I have used it every year to cut 2-3 acre lawn. It has original deck and bearings but has wore out 5 sets of blades.
Motor is M18 or a KT17 Kohler that has never needed anything but points/condenser and carb rebuild.
Now the problem. [b:f867fa3c29]Sometimes[/b:f867fa3c29] the motor will smoke really bad after startup but not smoke during the 4 or so hours cutting. Would have to add about a pint of oil after each cutting.
Next time I use it, there is no smoke at all. This has be going on for about three years, so I was preparing to rebuild the motor.
Now, It hasn't smoked at all for the last four cuttings and oil is full.
I have always used Chevron Dello 400 30#
I have professionally rebuilt hundred of engines, from small 2 stroke to large diesel and I have never seen an engine do this.

I have a 1998 Craftsman garden tractor with a Kohler cv22s and It does the same thing from time to time. The smoke is light blue and smells like oil.But it never uses oil between oil changes and plugs show no signs of oil burning oil.I use Shell Rotella 15-40 oil and change oil filter every 60 hours. The machine has about 700 hours on it.

A couple of possible causes.
1-carbon buildup in piston ring grooves or on rings causeing rings to stick.

2-crankcase breather valve dirty/sticking & oil being blown/sucked into eng past worn valve guides.
