Got a problem with our JD LT180 and its about to drive us crazy. When going up hills it slows down to a stop, the drive belt and fan stop as well, then you can smell hot rubber. Level ground its good. We have replaced the drive belt AND pulleys, thought it was the hydrostatic unit so just put in a new unit from Tuff Torq, but still does it! Everything is back on right, all the springs attached to make the belt tight. Could it be the front pulley?? I just don't know what else to do!!

Your drive belt is slipping on the drive pulley on the crankshaft. I would check and see if the pulley is worn out. I would be more inclined to think your tightener is stuck. (#2 is he pivot bushing) So even with the spring pulling it is not actually tightening the belt enough. Your hydro is not the issue if the drive pulley has stopped turning. Also check the tightener idlers. There maybe bad bearings that lock under load.

I was wondering about the pulley, how can I tell if its worn out? The belt is down past the top slightly, its not even with the top of the pulley. I had to hook a spring back up yesterday and put a ratchet strap on the tightener and it moved ok, I had to pull it one way so I could hook the spring on easily. I tried going up a hill again today and the belt did squeak some, so the pulley might be the answer.

Did you put the racket strap on the spring??? The tightener should not move much after the belt is tight. IF you can pull the tightener enough to put the spring on then something is wrong.
