Kohler KT17 variations

I have a Cub Cadet 682 with a tired KT17 engine. A Craigslist ad has an engine out of a JD317. Is this interchangeable? If not what are the differences?
Thanks, Roy

I don't know too much about the KT-17 engines except that the later "Series II" engines are much better and less trouble prone than the earlier models.
Probably the most significant difference is the high pressure oil system on the Series II engines which improved their reliability; especially when operated on steep grades.
The Series II is nearly the same as it's successor, the Magnum 18 which has a very good reputation.
Look for "Series II" on the sheetmetal.

The Kohler KT17 in your 682 is different then a John Deere KT17QS,
Crank shaft size is different, your PTO clutch will not fit.
The carb linkage is different
Some internal parts are the same.
Find a good M18 or a good KT17 series II from a cub cadet.
