John Deere L100 is running hot.

I will be helping a person with their John Deere L100 that is in their words running hot, and while I have not looked at it I was wondering if anyone has any experience with these mowers? The dealer is saying it needs a tune up kit. Thanks for any help, Jack
 
Guess since no one else has visited....

Regardless of what mower or engine, most all of these are air cooled singles or twins. You need to first determine if it is really "hot" or if the heat is just causing some hot legs. Many of these Deeres vent that hot air right at the legs.

I would look at the plugs for indications of concern.

Here are the things that would cause a hot engine.

1. Lean fuel/air ratio - correct with carb clean or tuning but
usually won't have much mower or run quite right.

2. Air movement - engines gotta move air. Plugged up fans,
shrouds, etc. Usually easy fix there.

3. Timing - If timing key is partially sheared, she will run hot.
Fix it.
 
Two thing:

First, check the engine shroud. Pull it off and blow out the cooling fins. Most engine manufacturers recommend that frequently. I try to do all of mine each winter.

Second, maybe it isn't. A friend's uncle (with early onset Alzheimers) had his riding mower back to John Deere three different times because it was running hot. Each time they would call my friend and tell her there was nothing don't but they checked it over. Finally they realized what was going on. He was seeing the hour meter and thought it was the temperature.

The cooling fins on the cylinder tend to get clogged over time. As others have suggested, pull the air director shroud covering the engine and have a look. If it is running hot you should see your reason immediately.
