I have a lt 1000 mower that just decided to quit. was mowing fine and it just shut off. cranks up but wont stay running. fresh gas no difference. hot batt oil is ok. Does anyone have any thoughts as to what they think the problem might be? It has a 17 hp brigs IC eng. Thanks

Trace where the shut off wire goes from the switch to the engine and make sure it does not have a spot on it that is shorting out on the frame some place. And or pull the plug off the back of the switch and short the solenoid to start it and see if it stays running. If it stays running unplugged you may have a switch going bad. These engine use a ground to short out the mag to shut them down so likely to have a problem in that circuit. I have a push mower that the throttle shut off thing went bad so I just pulled the wire off and shut it off by touching that wire to the engine

Thanks old. If I let it cool off it will run for about 15 or 20 mim. Then it just shuts off. On older farm tractors I have had the same thing happen and it is usually the coil. Do you think that could be the problem? I hosed the eng. off when it cooled down after the first time it died and it ran about 10 mim. I don't think it is a wire but I WILL check it out. The vent on the cap was pluged with dirt (thought that I had found the problem) but it didn't make any difference. Thanks Sam

The mag could be going bad seen that before. You might want to pull the top cover off and make sure you do not have a bunch of grass etc under it causing the engine to over heat

Just checked the wireing and it seems like it is in good shape. No fraying and all of the org. plastic ties are in place and not digging into the protective coating. I guess the flywheel is next. I just wanted to make sure that I wasen't overlooking anything. Thanks. Is it raining out your way? Here in Union it is cloudy and muggy about 80%.

Been raining on and off here at the Lake of the Ozarks for the past few weeks. There was a place in Union that I us-to get truck parts at but back a number of years ago a flood shut them down

He is still there but I don't think he is open. Every year he goes to the state fair and displays his old trucks.I don't know what day that is this year.

I know Lampkey is still there as in owns the place but due o the floods he shut down because his insurance did not cover the damage to the place and his tools etc. That is where I found parts for my 1963 Diamond-T

That little machine has safty switches that like to go bad or get loose in their mounting brackets. One under seat, one on clutch/break,one on mower ingagement and sometimes one on starting silinoid. First order of business is see wherther it's fire or fuel. Check spark when it quits, squirt a little fuel in carb to see if it fires.

you say it cranks up but won't stay running, if its doing that its gas issue period,or the solenoid on bottom of carb bowl acting up, if it has one. simple as that
