A friend of mine has a Cub Cadet 2160 with a snow blower attachment. He reported that it kept blowing the oil filter seal this past very cold winter.
I had never seen this problem before and I didn't ask enough questions before starting to diagnose it.
On a cool Spring day at about 40 degrees F ambient, we installed an oil pressure gauge and fresh 10W30 oil.
On start-up, the oil pressure immediately hit 120 psi! I shut it down immediately to re-group.
After asking more questions, two things popped up.
1. The owner was starting the engine at full throttle in -25F to -30F degree weather.
2. The Briggs OE filter states: "Hand Tighten Only". "Hand Tight" is very subjective, depending on how the installer interprets this instruction.
After a 5 minute warm-up period the oil pressure was 30 psi at idle and 40 psi at full throttle.
We could simulate colder conditions by chilling the oil in his freezer and adding the cold oil to the engine.
We decided to wait until winter to see if 5w30, tightening the filter properly, and warming up the engine at idle solves the problem.
See below for the seal squeezed out of the filter body. Regards,
JGC
