John Deere 345 Kaw Engine

Using daughter's mower the other day and her engine was making grinding noise
It seemed to come from the front of the engine. It was not making the noise all
the time but seemed to come and go at it's own will. Mower deck not turned on when the
noise started and stopped. Not moving either. Not a real loud grinding noise but enough to
know that it was there and shouldn't be.

Don't know anything about a JD 345 but a elect. pto clutch has got to be very similar to an air cond. clutch on a car and the bearing can be very noisy with out the a/c turned on. If you can see it and if the belt isn't turning saw a couple feet of your broom stick, put one end on the pully and your ear on the other end and see what it sounds like.

Figured out what was causing the grinding noise. It was an idler pulley located near the PTO. Thanks for all your help and responses.

Dear gab, I have done this and it is amazing what you hear. I used a wooden dial rod and I was shocked
when I listed to the end of it.
