i have a massey ferguson 12. previous owner bought new belts and did not get them on correctly. he says that it is hard job to put them on. do you have any suggestions for getting them on, easily?

Well, I would start by finding out if the belts you have are CORRECT for the tractor or not. Go with OEM belts because they are sized properly. The 2nd suggestion is to find a copy of the owners manual for this tractor. There are forums out there that are dedicated to the Massey brand and are often a very good source of information and other help. For example, MTF or My Tractor Forum has a Massey-specific forum and so does GTT - Garden Tractor Talk. Someone must have an owners manual for your tractor and would be willing to make a PDF of it that they can e-mail to you.

i have an operators manual. it does not tell how to install the belts.
would there be another manual that does?

thanks for your reply

The biggest problem with your question stems from the lack of information you provide. WHAT belts are you talking about? Is it just a single belt that drives an attachment? Is it a belt that connects the engine to the trans-axle? If it is an attachment issue, then you need the Op Manual for that attachment. I am not terribly familiar with Massey products so I do not know how well written their manuals are. That is why I suggested that you join the Massey forums on My Tractor Forum or Garden Tractor Talk because there will be a concentration of Massey owners there to help you.

Generally speaking, most belts have some sort of spring loaded idler wheel that takes up any slack or there is an adjustable belt tension device that can be backed off to make it easier to replace the belt. The Massey 12 was made by AMF from 1967 to 1976 and came in either hydrostatic or gear type transmissions. Apparently the gear type 4 speeds had a variable speed drive. But you don't tell us anything about your tractor other than the make and model.
