5 hp briggs oil consumption

bought a rear tine tiller that had very little use because it drinks oil. I bought the Briggs rings for it, can anyone tell me the ring gap? When I put them on and install the piston it is almost impossiable to move the piston in a lubed cylinder. I'm thinking ring gap must not be right. Haven't done this for 20 years and cant find my book. Thanks guys

.004" gap per inch of cylinder bore is a common rule of thumb for the B&S aluminum block engines.

For example: a 3" bore should have a ring end gap of at least .012".

B&S says end gap of up to .030" is acceptable before rings need to be replaced.

Be certain the ring gaps are staggered around the piston when installing.

Worn valve guides or a faulty crankcase breather can also cause oil consumption.

If you are using the chrome ring set with the thin rails for the oil ring, they may not be installed correctly in the ring groove.

This will cause a lot of drag in the cylinder.

THANKS CW I do have the thin rings for the oil ring. They were not on the piston when I removed it. It just had the thick oil ring around he piston and the bottom 1/2 was broken. I put them on the piston-- 1 on top and one on the bottom of the thick oil ring. I will look again for that dang book havn't seen it in years.
