John Deere GT 262 Burnt Ignition Switch??

GT 262 John Deere 48" cut. The engine wouldn't start at first after charging battery and checking voltage. I tried several times to start lawn tractor with the motor never turning over. I jumpered solenoid motor turned over and cranked but ran poorley. I tried the switch like I sais several times until it finally smoked. I removed switch and found that it had burned the trace across S1-S2 witch is the connection between the battery and starter. What could have caused this to burn up the circuit board? Thanks in advance.

Sounds like the battery was installed
backwards
