Kohler twin head gasket replacement

Just wanted to post and tell those who are trying to decide if they should try to replace a bad head gasket on a vertical shaft Kohler twin that it's an easy job that you can do yourself.
Our shop Cub Cadet had a bad head gasket on the CH730 series Kohler and it was blowing oil smoke. Very common to these engines.

Got a replacement gasket kit for $26.00 on EBay, took the upper shroud off, the valve cover, intake manifold bolts, exhaust pipe, and then pulled the head off after loosening 4 bolts.

Cleaned carbon off the head and the piston. Checked the head for flatness with a surface plate and .004"(factory spec) feeler gauge. Installed the new gasket and torqued the bolts to 370 inch-pounds (factory spec).

Re-assembled everything and fired it right up. Runs smooth again with no more smoking. Took about 3 hours and it was well worth it.

I am glad to hear that worked for you too. I just did both head gaskets on another Cub Cadet engine.

One thing: Backfire when stopping can quickly ruin a head gasket. Kohler recommends shutting the engine off at mid-throttle or above.

Yes, I am aware of the backfire issue. Biggest problem that we face at the shop is to have grown men follow instructions. Getting them to understand why we have to do things a certain way is a non-stop battle.

We pay these guys by the hour and when we have one of the plant workers mow the lawn it can take over 6 hours. I time myself and I can do it in 1hr and 45 minutes.

I have adopted a regimen where I bring the throttle down to a fast idle and run it for a couple of minutes to let the exhaust valves cool a bit and then I run the throttle up and shut the ignition off before it reaches full rpm. No more backfires.

Thanks for your response.
