Tecumseh valve retainer

The offset hole in washer type valve retainer striped out on a 6 hp flat head Tecumseh. I don't have a spring compressor but will buy or rent one if nessary. I can push the valve the valve down onto the seat through the spark plug hole. If I wedge the valve on it's seat with a wood dowel, can the new retainer be installed without removing cylinder head? I'm wondering if it's common for these to strip out. After pulling the vent plate off,I raised the valve off it's seat with a screwdriver blade. There isn't a great resistance while pushing valve up and down but each time the valve is lifted off the seat it remains up until a little pressure is applied to head. If the head has to be pulled does it sound like the guide should be reamed? Should the valve and seat be reground and/or lapped?

Never heard of one stripping out. Is the groove in the valve stem worn?

I don't use a compressor tool. Just two flat screwdrivers.

I think the head will have to come off.

Never seen that happen, just pull the head so you can see what's going on, no big deal. I got a compressor but have just used a screw driver or 2.

Hmmm.I was afraid you were gonna say it was unusual to strip. It's preplexing but valve stem looks no worse for the experience. The retainer has a prominate "bur" around the enlarged hole. This leads me to consider new valve, new spring, new retainer,grind/lap and test guide alighnment, ream guide. Thanks friends.

My guess it was never hardened correctly. I have seen one that broke in half through the center of the keyhole. Too hard I guess.

Put the piston on Top Dead Cylinder. Lock the crank somehow so it can't move!!!!.(Don't ask me how I leared this. Its no fun at all to see the entire valve through the spark plug hole.) Jam some cord-starter rope works well-in the spark plug hole to support the valve. Then have at it. On the 6 hp. I did, it didn't take much effort to put the retainer on.

I just remembered that I was using an air line in the spark plug hole to hold the valve in place. That is why the crank spun and the valve went in the cylinder. Like I said, be sure to lock the crank so it won't turn.
