318 Onan Electronic ignition

I have my "basket case" engine back together, I have compression, spark, fuel but it will not run. fuel vapor out the muffler, but it just won't run. Is it possible that the timing can be off with electronic ignition. Any ideas?

1. You did put the plastic ring with the magnet in it back on the crankshaft behind the flywheel, didn't you?

2. You did confirm the timing marks on the crankshaft and camshaft gears didn't you?

3. The valves are correctly adjusted, aren't they?

4.. The pickup (sometimes called the 'trigger') triggers off the magnet in that plastic ring. I have heard that sometimes the magnet fails/gets weak and then of course the trigger doesn't work.

5. The coil does have a condenser hooked to it, opposite the hot wire, doesn't it? It does the same job as if the engine had points.

6. The hot wire from the mower goes on the small terminal of the coil. One of the wires from the pickup (Trigger) hooks to this post too. I can't remember which color but if the ends have not been disturbed, it is the only one that will fit.

7. The other wire from the trigger goes on the large post on the coil. The condenser hooks to this post too.

8. One way to test the trigger if the starter can turn the engine over is to put a grounded test light to the large post on the coil. As the engine spins over the light should blink.

9. Another way I am told is that you can put a volt meter between the large post and a ground. Then rotate the flywheel by hand. The meter should read over 9v except at the point where the magnet passes the trigger. Then it should drop below 2v.

10. If you have both the spark plug wires off the plugs some times you will never see any spark jump. The coil has to be able to jump a spark at both wires simultaneously because it is a double lead/double ended coil.

11. I hope the above will be some help. I have seen some triggers do some strange things.

12 I have seen several of these engines with bad valve seats that won't develop enough compression to fire.

Timing is set by installing the coil and trigger properly.I would check the compression and the valve seats. They have been known to come lose.If you would like a manual. Go to smokstak post a model and serial number. Plus a email address. Some one will send you one for free.
