JD 455 Mower Deck Shear Pin?

I hit a stump earlier today and my mower deck did not fare well. Is there a shear pin in the decks gear box? Thanks for any and all advice.

Have you removed the top cover of the deck? Perhaps you either snapped the drive belt or popped it off the pulleys.

It is possible that it might be a sheared spindle that allowed the pulley on that spindle to fall to one side. That would release the belt tension on the other two blade spindles, thus preventing the deck from cutting any more grass.

First check was ensuring drive shaft was spinning. Pulled deck off and problem is confirmed in the gear box.

Sorry to hear that. I suspect that this is a bevel drive. You are going to have to remove the gearbox, put it on your workbench in a tray to catch the oil and then open it up to see what broke. You may have shattered a gear or if the gear is keyed to the input shaft, you may have sheared off the key. I know that you were hoping for some sort of safety device but I sincerely doubt that such an animal exists. At this point, you need to hope that Deere stocks and sells individual parts for that gearbox.

No shear pin, and no parts available from JD, just a complete gearbox!

I love my 455 and 60" deck, but hold by breath whenever it contacts anything but grass!

Find out what you need and visit eBay, I've had pretty good luck finding used parts there.
