bumping to re-post as I don't have a clue how to fix this problem. Do I need to re[place the safety switches? Or what ?
thanks

Hi all, went to fire up the JD 210. It started right up, BUT when I flipped the electric PTO on, it kills the engine.
Machine has NO mower or blower or any other device mounted. So.. can somebody tell me what's going on here and how to fix it on the cheap?

thanks all

1. Could be a safety switch issue.

2. Could be the the circuit breaker is weak or there are poor connections at the breaker, ignition switch, etc..

3. Clutch coil could be shorted, drawing too much current.

Start by unplugging the clutch, then see if the engine still dies when you switch on the PTO. If it DOES, it's a safety switch issue, if NOT, it's a weak breaker or shorted clutch issue.

If you have no clue about it, better let some one that knows what they are doing work on it.
It will be cheaper in the long run.

Bob, thanks for the tips. I suspect it's something simple like a bad connection, or...similar. I had to leave it out over the winter and some connector just fouled (I hope). I hate to start blindly swapping out parts.
ON a side note: --Yesterday, I helped my buddy get his mower mounted/belted up on his new-old 216. First test drive it was all OK and mowing fine. Then it just quit dead. It would only click to pull in the starter solinoid (orPTO)
not sure which. After a while we discovered the PTO switch was bad: as if wiggled about 1/4 ON she'd start and run fine, but if you let go the switch she'd quit.
I thank a new switch will get it. Hopefully mine is that simple.
