JD STX 38 tranny woes

The reverse is no more on my five-speed tranny. Will just any STX 38 transmission couple to my 1993 model? Any differences between the yellow deck; which is what I have and the black deck? A small engine service gentleman stated he hasn't worked on this model and his acquaintance said repairs in the tranny could be costly. It mows fine going forward and I have a bagger for it so parting with it doesn't suit me. Thanks in advance for any input. BTW; mine, like many is hood-less.

Enter your model # (STX38) without and spaces and links to PC2232 and PC2399 will come up.
 
I am thinking that reverse in that transmission was a chain drive and all the forward gears were just that-gears. I bet your chain has broken. If your sprockets are still useable, you might get by just replacing the chain. Only a parts diagram of the transmission would tell us for sure.
