I could not get a reading on the dipstick so I decided to change oil. Ther real problem is the new oil is so nice and clean I still cant read the level. Wold a drop or two of food coloring help orn what are your suggestions Thanks, Henry

Wipe some blackboard or drawing chalk onto the face of the dipstick, you will then be able to see the oil against the chalk easier than you can against the metal of the dipstick.

Grandpa always wanted me to rub the dipstick in the dirt when he couldn't see the oil. Makes me shudder to think about it.

Just pull the dipstick out and lay it on a paper towel. There will only be a stain where the oil is.

Isn't using chalk or dirt about the same as putting abrasive in the transmission?

Agree re not putting dirt onto the dipstick but chalk will do no harm especialy if it is wiped clean after reading the level.
