214 transmission problem/question

My 1986 JD 214 has a transmission problem. While mowing and trying to put it in reverse it would not move. When putting it in 3rd or 4th gear and letting the clutch out it kills the engine. When it is in neutral and the clutch is let out it moves by itself like it's in 1st gear. I don't know if the shifter shafts are out of alignment or something more serious. I'm sure has to be disassembled to see what is wrong. Are parts still available to repair this? If anyone has any experience working on these would you please share them with me? Thanks for any assistance.

The detent balls and springs have probably got broken and you are stuck in second.
You can find out a lot about that tractor on the weekend freedom machines website.
That tractor uses a Peerless 2300-series transaxle, most likely a 2317.
You can download the manual for the transaxle from that website. I am not sure the
Peerless Gear website works any more since the were owned by Tecumseh and
Tecumseh is no longer.

The overhaul for that transaxle is straightforward but does require caution.
There's bound to be a video on youtube, too.

Very likely detent spring failed. I just rebuilt a transmission like that last year. Detent springs are available from John Deere for minimal cost. Thing is the transmission has to come apart completely. Its a bit tricky to reassemble because the transmission case splits in half and today reassemble you need to align everything inside at the same time. Also if you happen to need other parts like shafts or gears they may or may not be available and very expensive if they are. It's possible though that you will only need detent springs and gaskets and seals.
