Vintage Tiller with 5HP B and S Engine...

I have a 1974-vintage True Value branded garden tiller with a 5HP Briggs and Stratton 4-cycle engine.

I only use it a few times each year, but it almost always starts on the first pull, even after sitting all winter.

It's starting to smoke, and I was wondering if parts are available to rebuild those engines. I did a little searching, and all I can find are maintenance-type items, and carb parts.

It didn't cost me anything, and I've had it for about 25 years, so it doesn't owe me a dime!

Go look at the engine and find the identification tag. Write down all the information. Then go to Briggs & Stratton's website and look up your engine using the information from that ID tag. You should be able to locate the parts manual for your engine. PRINT IT OUT. Local engine builders can tell you how much it will likely cost to rebuild it. However, if you have only used it a few times each year, maybe it does not need rebuilding. Maybe you have a different problem such as a defective crankcase breather or a plugged air filter that is causing the engine to run too rich. You do not tell us about the colour of smoke you are seeing or when you are seeing it. All of that matters.

Most parts for the B&S engines are still available , let me know if I can help if you decide to rebuild, I am a parts dealer

Thanks, guys. I have the numbers - just not with me. I'll print out a manual.

The smoke is bluish, and not too thick, and starts after it's been running a while.

I have replaced the air filter, but not the crankcase breather.

Yes you can find most parts but you really don't want to get into a prim and proper full rebuild of
that engine unless money means nothing. You need the model and spec numbers to get parts.
Answers for questions you didnt ask are: for a few short uses each year I'd put some oil burning
reducer additive in it and be happy. If you decide to get into it you should know that back in that
time frame B&S made some engines with aluminum bores and some with cast iron sleeves. If your engine
has an aluminum bore don't waste your effort and dollars rebuilding it. If you have a cast iron bore
take it down far enough to determine if the rod, rod journal, bore and piston are good enough to reuse.
If so, throw a set of rings and gaskets in it and lap the valves. The only B7S tiller engines I rebuild
are the ones where a pulley is used on the camshaft to provide reverse and even then owners often go
with a replacement engine and without reverse or junk the tiller when they get a price on the rebuild.
A $100 6.5HP HF engine conversion being the preferred option most of the time.

Thanks, Butch. I think I'll take your advice to "put some oil burning reducer additive in it and be happy"!

Another question: I downloaded a Parts List, and I see a "Valve Chamber Breather", but not a "Crankcase Breather".

Am I missing the Crankcase Breather on the Parts List, or are those two things the same?

'Valve chamber' breather is located over the lower end on valve stem, cam follower area- and crankcase is open to that area also for lube, breathing. Double Plate with reed valves mostly, some have a diaphragm at times for 'pulse' fuel pump use. RN
