Power King steering upgrade?

I have a mid-70s PK/Jim Dandy 1614 that serves me well, but wanders due to the steering being in very poor condition. I think its time to rebuild the original or maybe upgrade to something better. I see that bearings and seals and bits & pieces are available. I wonder if that is enough to get the steering back in shape? What about the main worm/sector parts? Barring that or finding an affordable (I know) nos box is there another option? I read a post where a guy mentioned having a golf cart box on his PK. Anybody know anything more about that? What cart/box might work? Any other Ross type boxes that could be fitted? My tractor is far from original or stock, so any workable solution would be fine.

I have 4 Power King tractors and unless your steering column has broken out the top of the Ross steering box, they can be repaired. If you take it apart you will more than likely find that the beveled pin which interacts with the worm gear inside the box is shot. Takes the same pin as a Cub Cadet Or JD. You can find the pin on ebay, made by a guy in Pa. Clean it up and replace the bearings. Then start on all the other places that are probably bad. Wheel bearings, Tie rod ends.Bushing in axle pivot. Bushings in the spindles at the outer ends of the axle, and check the nut on the end of the axle where it goes through the spindle. And also the key and key way of the steering arm. Lots of places with a little slop add up to really sloppy steering.

I have fixed several steering assemblies on the PK.
If the column is loose at the steering box, I have a piece of exhaustpipe the diameter of the steering column and slip it over it and clamp it to the steering box, really tightens it up a bunch.
The part of exhaust pipe at the steering box I have flared so it fits over it aboot two inches and use the bolts that hold it to the support on the frame.

Dave & Harvey, thanks for the repliies and advice. I am going to open it up this weekend and have a look. I agree the pin is likely the problem. I suspect the bearings also. The entire front end is rebuilt, only the steering box remains to be the source of trouble.
