Got a problem with my JD LT180 lawn mower, about a year ago I had a similar problem and replaced the hydrostatic fan, part number M809036, it will not back up a hill at all, makes a whining sound, it will go forward a little better, the belt is tight but has never been replaced, you guys think a belt will fix it or the hydro is out of it. Mower has 469 hours.

I worked on one of those once that the hub was stripped in the transmission pulley. But looks like it wouldn't go at all with a stripped hub.

Have you seen any leaks around or under the transmission?

Your hydrostat transaxle is bad. Several people say that it is a weak unit from the start. Probably one or more of the following-low on oil, damaged oil(overheated-bad fan), or operator abuse.
Bought one on auction last summer, a bit over 600 hours on the clock. Seemed to drive around the lot ok, but wouldn't climb the ramps onto trailer. Could mow only about 15-20 minutes at a time, then let it cool down & go again. With a few "not recommended" changes I got it so I could finish my mowing,(about 1 1/2 hours).
There is a conversion available for a heavier unit, but at 2200 bucks I decided to replace with original model. From the genuine green/yellow dealer it runs about $650, but found one for $230, new in the box. Had to make a few minor changes, still need to adjust brake rod length.
Took it for a test drive last Friday. Will now climb the road ditch bank, climb ramps onto trailer, pop wheelies, spin on rapid reverse, so probably good to go.
