1450 Cub Cadet engine change

I have two 1450"s in my collection, one with a broken block, and one knocking. My question is, does a 2 cyl Kohler make a fit in that frame, and if not what does? Thanks...Darald

The frame for the 1450 is basically the same as the 82 Series Cubs. Thus, a KT-17 or a M-18 will fit in there with some mounting modifications.

Rebuilding the existing K321 would be many times cheaper and you'll have a much more durable engine when done. Complete rebuild kits and new balancing gears for the K321 can be had in the $130-$140 range (rod, piston, valves, and gasket kit) and the machine shop work should be in $100 range too unless its the unit with the hole in the block - but patching that shouldn't be too expensive either. I rebuilt my K341 8 years ago in my 1450 - best investment I could have made.

Or you could go this route - Briggs Vanguard 2 cylinder engine with 18 HP - $1400 with a 3 year warranty.

I wouldn't replace a K321 with a KT17 if it was even money - series l or ll. For some reason neither has the durability of the old splash lube single cylinder. I've seen a lot of 82 series Cubs parked and scrapped (even with their high desirability) because of engine failure and never repaired because of the massive cost of replacement parts for KT17 engines. A friend of mine has really nice 782 with a replacement Series ll engine, sitting with a broken rod (total hours is only about 600 (for both engines)) and he is looking at over a $1000 to get it running again. It sits while he uses a $200 MTD to mow the lawn. He can't bring himself to sell it as parts and eat the loss (he paid over $1200 for it) but he can't bring himself to spend over $1000 to get it running again.
