MTD Lawn Tractor Jumping Out of Forward Gear

I have an MTD Tractor Model 13AM660F131, serial No. 1D162370386. Had the transaxle apart over the winter and added new grease. Just managed to get everything back together. New drive belts front and rear. This Frankenstein tractor is really starting to get to me. She runs fine in reverse, but if I put here in forward she will run for awhile and then jump out of gear an into neutral. When I try to put her back into gear, it almost sounds like your trying to shift a manual shift car without using the clutch. If I hold it in forward it seems to run okay. I have tried adjusting the shift lever multiple times with no change in what happens. What am I missing? I'm about ready to pull the transaxle again and try switching the the forward and reverse cogs in the transaxle.

Is that the one where the transmission is basically just forward and reverse and the "gears" are actually a variable belt sheave? If so Father in law had one and it was a battle to keep it working. Rounded dogs, bent shifting fork, worn detents all showed up quickly in use. Luckily parts were available and cheap. Then came wear in the pinion shafts, bushiings and big gear. This let things wobble round and caused it to come out of gear also. I made a latch to hold the lever in gear. Was glad when he got rid of that one,,

You described it to a "T". I call it the lawn tractor from HELL. Did you try switching the position of the forward and reverse cog? I'm a;so thinking of either using a bungee cord or a latch to keep it in the forward position.

The solution is a new transmission. In a lot of cases its a different part number and is somewhat larger outside dimensions than the original. I used to replace several a year back when the dealership did extended warranty work.

The problem is wear in the gear hubs, worn shaft and worn or damaged dogs on the spool between the gears. The forward gear gets the most wear. Guess why! Then it starts wobbling on the shaft and either the dog clutch walks out of mesh with it or it loses mesh with the bevel pinion.

I looked twice at trying to repair one, by the time you get the parts you are well on your way to the cost of a new one.

Don't go crazy. You need a guy down the street like one of my friends. He wheels and deals in junk lawn tractors and fixes them up and resells them. You can pick up the whole rear for $125 to $150. Not that hard to change out. Maybe most of an afternoon. See if you can find someone like that.
