hard starting Kolher command 17

I have a Kolher command 17 that will not start cold without either. Starter is
cranking the engine over well. The choke is working. I thought it acted like
the intake valve was too tight. It has hydraulic lifters so no adjustment on
the Valves.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

With the air cleaner off can you hold your hand over the intake so as to choke it more?? If you can you should both get a good suction and also get gas on your hand. If you do not get both you either have a carb that needs cleaned or a vacuum leak in the intake area

When did it last run?
What is it on?
When did it last start easy?
How old is the gas in it?
Has it pretty much just sat there all Winter?

I've got a Magnum that was the exact same way. Turns out there was just enough slop in the linkage that the choke was just a hair shy of completely "choking". I pulled the choke lever all of the way and just so happened to reach in and push the shaft to see if it helped. It started right up. In the past you would nearly run the battery dead to get it started. I readjusted and all is well. Must have happened as it aged as nothing else on the mower had changed.

I'm betting your choke isn't doing a complete job. These Kohlers seem to really like their choke when they are cold.

Follow all of the other advice and I will tell you to use Hi-test with a dash of Sta-bil in your machine. This winter in my Gravely I used straight AV gas! That is 104 octane baybe. I had to readjust the carb all over but now it POPS of no matter what.

Another thing is the oil. All of the new manuals show multi type oils now and they do crank much faster. I use 5-20W Synthetic oil. Keeps the engines spotless inside and they spin faster when cold.
