hard starting Kolher command 17

I have a Kolher command 17 that will not start cold without either. Starter is
cranking the engine over well. The choke is working. I thought it acted like
the intake valve was too tight. It has hydraulic lifters so no adjustment on
the Valves.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Simple things FIRST... check for intake manifold or gasket leaks and verify that the choke is closing TIGHTLY.

I went through that with a Yanmar 3-cylinder in a DEERE 322 at the beginning of winter.

I thought is was the coldest-blooded thing ever 'til I took at close look at the choke, and adjusted the linkage and the plate position to get it to close tightly.

After that, it started easily at -10ºF.

The choke butterfly closes completely that was the first thing I checked. I did have it running today. It wasstillhardtostart after it warmed up.
