Hydraulic cylinders JD others

Anyone ever rebuild the hydraulic cylinders like the ones Deere used and I think others where the cylinder is all welded together.
I was thinking Of grinding or cutting the weld off and go to a local hyd. shop and get the seals. Then you would have to reweld it back together. Just wondering if anyone tried this and had success.

These are known as throw-away cylinders because the cost of rebuilding them is greater than the cost for a new one.

To open that cylinder up properly, it needs to be chucked in a lathe and centered prior to cutting the casing. Once the seals have been replaced, then it must be carefully aligned prior to some very careful welding by someone familiar with performing such work on pressure vessels.

Out here in farm country, you'd be hard-pressed to find a machine shop, welding shop, or hydraulic shop that HASN'T repaired cylinders of that type at one time or another.

And not ONE "exploding pressure vessel" death that I have ever heard of! (Tom gets a little dramatic at times.)

(In most cases, these little tractor hydraulic systems operate at 1/3 to 1/2 of the pressure of a farm or industrial machine.)

Worst likely issue would be a small leak from a pinhole in the weld that would have to be re-done.

That being said, I recently cut open, resealed, and welded back together the steering cylinder from s friend's DEERE 318, with no issues.

Have not done a lot of them. But,doing them has saved quite a bit of money. I use a thin disc in an angle grinder to take them apart. Used a lathe on the first two, but cut does not have to be that precise. Local hydraulic cylinder shop sells seals to fit quite reasonably.
