Type of axle oil.

I recently drained the oil from my rear axle because it was milky in color. I have a CASE 646 tractor and am wondering what type of oil do I put back into the axle.

You have a choice.

You can use motor such as straight grade 30 weight, 15W40,
20W50 multigrade or if you wish, you can use 80W90 gear oil.

There is compelling reason to choose gear oil because the rear
axle has straight cut gears, not hypoid cut gears. Personally, I
dislike the smell of gear oil and much prefer to use motor oil.

The case Owners Manual says that for the transaxle you have a choice of either API service class SE or CC 20w40 or SAE EP80 Gear Lube.

If you go with the EP80, I'd recommend GL1 spec. as some of the later specs like GL5 have additives that do not play well with any 'yellow metals' that may be in the transmission.
