Ingersol 4016,onan compression check

I live in Michigan, use my Ingersol 4016 to blow snow and it is very hard to start in cold(below 20) weather. When it does start it runs on one cylinder until it warms up for about 5 minutes.I have no problem in warmer weather.I suspect a cylinder with low compression. My questions are: Can I discover the reason-valves or rings without removing the head? Can I reuse the head gasket? What is the torque number for head bolts? Onan P216 with1200 hours. Thanks for any suggestions or answers.

First, examine the intake manifold, those Onans were typically made with two haves sealed together with silicon.

Goo fails, air is sucked in, leaning mixture to one cylinder, causing exactly what you describe.

I'm familiar with the intake problem. I also have a jd316 that had the problem. However the Ingersol floods and one time backfired in the muffler so I don't think it's lean

My onan in case 446 acted same as yours, after tearing it down, I found clyinder fins plug with grass clippings, it had overheated so bad that 1 of the valves was warped and valve guides and stems were also scored . It's pretty easy to remove intake and tins, check valve seats for leakage ect.

Have the valves been adjusted anytime in recent memory? I have seen several in the past 2 or 3 years that had major valve problems, like loose valve seats in the block. I think this came from running too long with the valve adjustment too loose.

You can do a leakdown test and see if you have valve problems, remove the air cleaner cover, and the dipstick, lock the crank at TDC on the power stroke on whichever cylinder, and put air in the cylinder and listen to see where it comes out. you should only hear air escaping through the dipstick/crankcase.
A leakdown tester is even better if you have access to one.

I would not count on re-using the head gasket.

The head gaskets are a graphite composition and cannot be reused. Head bolt torque is 14 - 16 ft lbs. Intake manifold bolts 6-10 ft lbs. and these gaskets are the same material as the head and will need replacing if disturbed. The valve lash is .005 intake and .013 exhaust. These engines have a tendancey to carbon up the intake ports. If you run Techron fuel system cleaner about once a year it will help keep them clean.

A decent compression gauge is less than $25 and so
easy to check why guess? Although I do not have
vast experience with Onans all three of our
Ingersoll tractors we have purchased used were hard
to start and ran on one cylinder when cold and all
three had intake leaks so I suspect same as Bob
that you are going to find an intake leak or maybe
an ignition problem on that side, not a compression
problem. Even if found to be a bit low the cylinder
should still fire.
