i have acquired a john deere stx 38 riding mower. do i have to stop to change gears? seems to be the only way.

Reminds me of about 30 yrs. ago at work they had a little rear eng. JD rider. They hired a young kid to mow the lawn. He came pushing it in, said it wouldn't move, found small chain knotted up and a gear broken into, asked him if he ever used the clutch. Kid says "clutch man, what the hells a clutch, nobody said anything about no clutch".

snapper riders do not have to use clutch, except when starting, or changing directions, or stopping.
you can shift, on the go

I say thar ole! chap.
The Snapper uses a friction disc for the transmission and the John Deere uses a gear type.
There is as much difference betwixt the two as there is a dog and a cat.
